A brief history of Red Roof.
Red Roof’s first inn opened in Columbus, Ohio. It was 1973 and room rates were just $8.50 a night.
It was founded by James R. Trueman, a Columbus builder and contractor (with a passion for driving race cars in his spare time.) He believed, like many of our guests, in simplicity and economy without giving up quality. He focused on the meaning of value — good, clean comfortable rooms, a friendly, attentive staff and charging less for it.
Trueman was dedicated to providing a winning stay for all Red Roof guests. And he took pride in being consistent, whether you were in Atlanta or Washington--and for being known as “the smart choice” for travelers. By 1986, Red Roof grew to 155 motels. Trueman later became an Indy 500 winning team owner.
Today, Red Roof has over 450 inns in 40 states and has grown internationally with 2 properties open in Brazil, a PLUS+ property open in Osaka, Japan and others to follow in Canada and Thailand. Red Roof also employs over 6,000 people and serves millions of guests each year.
